Shower Room Vanity Unit - Part 7 - The Doors

I originally had designed the cabinet with a single door but found it may hit the adjacent central heating radiator when installed. So I changed to a two door arrangement.
The hinges were to be concealed so I chose brass Brusso L37 offset knife pivot hinges. These are expensive but really good quality.
I also had some nice spalted beech in stock. So this was used to produce some nice book-matched, raised panels for insetting into the oak frames.

raised panel doors.

The doors were also to be rabbeted (UK rebated) on the mating faces.
After all the stock was dimensioned and cut to length the mortises were cut in the stiles. The rails were mortised and slots cut all around for the panels.
It was decided to pre-finish the panels prior to assembly to aid finishing. Sanding a panel once it is in a frame is not easy.
Beautiful and striking spalted
beech raised panels - prefinished.
I coated the panels with 2 coats of shellac giving it a light sanding with 320 grit between coats. Then two coats of General Finishes Exterior 450 water-based top coat was applied.

The frame of the doors is stile and rail with the rails tenons going into mortises in the stiles. Again this is all made from French oak.

The hinge mortises can be seen.
I also mortised for the Brusso offset pivot hinges using a combination of a Dremel with a router bit to hog out the waste and then chisels to finesse.
